THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT BPW Canada congratulates the Government of Canada for responding to the concerns of the Canadian people on the issue of pornography by having struck an investigative commission through the Department of the Minister of Justice; and urge the Government of Canada and members of the Commission to:a) examine the obscenity act as described under the Criminal Code, Section 159 (and its relevant subsections) and its failure to deal with the issue of pornography with a view to revising the definition to be inclusive of pornography and more objective than subjective in its interpretation;b) define pornography as the representation or description of sexual behaviour that is degrading, coercive, and abusive and/or violent;c) undertake to conduct an education program for all Canadians on the reality, extent and effects of pornography;d) increase the penalties to jail terms and/or substantial fines for those convicted of the production, distribution, presentation and purchase of materials found to be pornographic under the revised definition.FURTHERMORE, be empowered and prepared to react to the recommendations of the National Commission of Pornography and Prostitution in accordance with the intent of this resolution.
