From the President’s Desk

As president of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (BPW Canada), I am delighted that Convention 2010 will be held at the gorgeous Horseshoe Resort, one hour north of Toronto off Highway 400. The setting will be a wonderful spot to celebrate BPW Canada’s 80th anniversary.

Our mandate – to develop the professional and leadership potential of women in Canada through education, awareness, advocacy and mentoring within a supportive network – has not changed over the years. Our goal is the improvement of economic, political, social and employment conditions for women in Canada.

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was quoted on many occasions as saying that "there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women." That objective is what BPW Canada has been promoting for 80 years - the education and empowerment of women.

This year, we will be “doing something different.” The BPW Ontario Provincial Conference will open on Thursday evening, June 17th, and will continue all day Friday. Friday evening, June 18th, BPW Ontario members and those members coming in from across the country will “meet and greet” at a barbeque with entertainment (TBA). It promises to be a fun event! BPW Canada Convention 2010 will begin early Saturday, June 19th and continue until around noon on Sunday. BPW Toronto – 100 years old in 2010 – will be the official sponsor of the Saturday evening banquet.

Our theme for Convention 2010, as well as for this biennium, is Impacting our changing world ~ Le pouvoir de changer notre monde en évolution. BPW Canada has changed over the years – as the world around us has changed – and we still have a lot to offer to make conditions better for girls and women here in Canada and around the world. We are pleased to welcome our BPW International President Liz Benham to this important gathering. Her Excellence the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, has also been invited, and we are awaiting news.

There are ways that YOU, as a BPW member or club and/or as a business owner can get involved:

• Several clubs are celebrating milestones in 2010. BPW Toronto will be 100 years old, and will sponsor the banquet on Saturday night. Is your club marking a milestone? • There will be limited advertising space available in the Convention workbook. If you would like to purchase a page, 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8, again contact me directly for information and pricing.
• We will have “grab bags” at Convention, which is again an opportunity for you to promote your company, your club or your cause. If you have anything you would like to contribute (quantities of 125), please contact me directly.
